Holiday Travel Necessities

By Alexia Gonzalez on November 25, 2014

The holiday season is the perfect time of the school year to take a break in order to unwind, travel back home, or even take a short-lived vacation with close friends.

Whether via airplane or automobile, the journey is typically not as glamorous as the destination. Although spending a week re-inhabiting your old stomping grounds or exploring a new city with friends can be fabulous, sweating in a car seat all day or being cramped up in a stale airplane is certainly not.

Leading such busy lives seldom leaves time for thorough pre-trip organization, so it doesn’t hurt to admit that you may need a little help in the packing department.

Luckily, with some preparation you can avoid the worst travel consequences of all– imagine wrinkly clothes, mismatched outfits, and oily skin–so it’s important to be ready for anything.

Along with style, comfort and preparation should be essential to any successful vacation. I’ve rounded up several of my favorite travel must-have items to make sure that your hiatus is a worry-free experience that remains all about creating exciting new memories, bonding with friends and family, and an overall incredible way to finish off a great year no matter how many miles lay ahead of you!

Large Tote

A stylish large tote is the most accessible way to keep your valuable travel items close by.

Stow away your makeup case, jewelry bag, toiletries and a change of clothes at your feet so that in case of a luggage mishap (misplaced airline baggage is definitely a thing, ladies) you are more than prepared to continue on your journey unscathed.

Go-to Jacket

No traveler has ever regretted packing an extra sweater! Considering the current chilly climate, a quality jacket will probably be one of your smartest packs.

From denim to military, or leather, a sturdy coverall is a must have when temperatures drop. Throw it on for some brisk afternoon sightseeing around the town or for a breezy dinner outing and it’ll be the only outer layer that you need.

Chunky Scarf

A chunky scarf can function as a warm pillow or comfy blanket during a lengthy car or airplane ride.

Wind it around your neck for added insulation or wear it over a casual outfit as a funky fall accessory.

Versatile Dress

A midi or sheath dress is the perfect item to take you from brunch to cocktail hour.

Simply switch out flats for wedges, add some accessories, and you’ll instantly have two distinct outfits on hand perfect for any occasion (hey, you never know where the night will take you!).

Boots

Boots are the easiest and most versatile shoes to keep on hand during a fall outing.

A good pair provides not only warmth in a range of temperatures, but also comfort and support for lengthy walks and rainy days, not to mention that they pair fashionably with anything from skinny jeans to a sundress.

Take your fave riding boots on your trip to avoid bulking up your luggage or pack a portable pair of ankle booties to keep your toes energized and cozy.

Fall Hat

A great fall hat will add an effortlessly cool vibe to any vacay getup while masking the fact that your hotel shampoo didn’t quite do the job (or lack thereof).

You can’t go wrong with a casual floppy brim hat to block out those sunny rays while enjoying some touristy activities, or a low-key beanie when roasting s’mores on the back porch with mom and dad.

Either way, a good head topper is a fashionable life saver in times of matted travel hair.

Oil Absorbing Sheets

Spending your day in an airplane or car can mean extra-oily skin, and a compact pack of oil blotting sheets is the perfect way to absorb that excess oil production around your T-zone.

Try Clean and Clear oil absorbing sheets that instantly soak up oil and remove shine from your face, without smudging makeup or leaving behind powder. Use them anytime, anywhere to remove oil and shine throughout the day.

Makeup Removing Wipes

Ready to hit the sack or take a catnap? Don’t even think about falling asleep with a face full of make up! Keep a simple pack of cleansing wipes handy to remove any eye makeup or foundation in order to keep your skin fresh and moisturized for the remainder of your trip.

BB Cream

A long-wear BB cream is perfect for road trips: the multi-tasking, lightweight formula is just enough coverage to look polished, and its 12-hour lifetime means you’ll still look fresh when you reach your destination.

A BB Cream is a lightweight alternative to a heavy foundation or powder that will still provide those blemish concealing results.
